The Mineral Sunscreen We All Need
A couple years ago, Pete discovered the app Think Dirty while I was at Liz Gilbert’s writing workshop in Napa.
For those of you who don’t already know Think Dirty, it allows you to scan the barcode of the skincare products in your home and it rates their developmental and reproductive toxicity, carcinogenicity, and immunotoxicity.
Anyway, so Pete discovered this app, and in the three days I was gone, he scanned all of our products and threw out everything that Think Dirty ranked poorly. Our sunscreens (all five of them) were in the assortment of cancer-causing items that ended up in the trash.
Since then we’ve tried a handful of different mineral sunscreens, but they always leave my skin looking bright white and cakey, which is fine when we’ve hiking in Yosemite for a weekend, but less fine when I’m at an event with friends in LA. So when I discovered Maelove, I was super excited.
I invited Jackie Kim, the co-founder of Maelove to join us at Work Sesh, and she brought The Sun Protector for us to try. I can say, it passed the Work Sesh approval test with flying colors.
It goes on smooth, does not leave a white residue, and feels light on your face. I stocked up on it, so I’ll never have to use the awful goopy zinc again.
The three long years the Maelove team spent perfecting The Sun Protector was well spent. Plus, the fact that it was created by MIT engineers, a chemist, and a medical researcher means that this product has been considered from all angles and was really developed with quality and performance in mind. Maelove takes a different approach than most beauty brands, and I'm a huge fan of everything they're building.
